Today was a fantastic day!  I had the day off work and everyone in the family had something on (school for the kids and work for Lisa) so I was left to my own devices.  So this morning I got up as they left the house and headed out with my camera gear on my own.  I spent time in Pike Place Market, the Seattle Public Library (yes I went back), and Gasworks Park.

Gasworks Park is a 20 acre public park on the north shore of Lake Union overlooking downtown Seattle.  It’s the former site of the Seattle Gas Light company’s “Gasification Plant” (and no I didn’t make that up).  The park still has a number of old machines left from when the plant shut down.  Some of it is fenced off, but there’s a play barn and picnic shelter that has loads of old machines that have been painted bright colors.

This is a really cool park, they even have a man-made kite flying hill to help you get loads of wind.  While I was there a woman was at the top of the hill flying her stunt kite.

Anyhow, hopefully you can see from the picture below just how cool the play barn is.  The best bit was that as today was a work day, nobody was there!  I had the place completely to myself and got the chance to take loads of really cool pictures.  As I’ve posted some “right out of the camera” shots over the last couple of days, I thought I’d go in the other direction.  This is a 5 shot HDR image.  For those that don’t know, that stands for High Dynamic Range and allows me to photograph subjects that have very dark and very light areas.

(Here is the technical bit – stop reading if you want) Now the human eye can take in around 14 stops of light, but a digital camera can only do high single digits.  This is why when you see something cool and take a picture it doesn’t always look the same.  Using multiple images, each of which is taken with a different exposure (i.e. some are dark and some are light), you can mix them together in special software to get a composite image the shows you the dark shadows without “blowing out” the highlights.  This is HDR.  I won’t lie I really love this process, I find I can better reproduce what I actually saw, and usually even make it better.

I know I said no more tulips, but our Halo heroes felt they didn’t get their chance to pay homage to spring and the tulip extravaganza I’ve been on for the last couple of weeks.  Here is their one and only tulip image.

It’s been a while since I posted a plane, so tonight I’m posting another shot from the Museum of Flight.  This is the Goodyear F2G-1 a really cool plane.  I remember going to the Museum a while ago with a friend and took a picture of this plane and it looked terrible.  At the time I hadn’t learnt how to photograph HDR so the image was blown out in some places and overly dark (under exposed in others).

When I went back in January and took this picture I’d perfected a lot of the process and was able to get a much nicer picture.

This plane is positioned in the corner of the main exhibit area and is surrounded by glass (as you can see) and this makes it quite hard to get a good shot.  But thanks to a tripod and some patience I think this came out really well.  The paint color is a deep green and the light through the window really brought that out.

Tonight our Halo hero’s decided to draw around each other – no, I have no idea why either!

I’m really angry with myself as last night I passed up a fantastic picture (because I was too tired) – how lame is that?  I was driving home and it was a lovely evening, nice sunset, warm, blue sky (you get the idea).  Anyway I was driving past some field and right near the fence was a tiny calf (yes that’s right a baby cow).  It was eating grass and very close to the side of the road.  There was even a place to park up!  But no, I was too tired, so I drove on and went home.  All the way thinking, I’ll get the picture tomorrow, it will be there then.

So tonight I leave work and it’s raining really hard.  I get to the field and there isn’t a cow, calf, duck, goat, chicken in sight – nothing.  I bet I NEVER see that bloody cow again.  As a result I didn’t get a picture and am forced to post something I captured the other day.

On Sunday Lisa, Abi and I went to Seattle and I got this shot of Lisa and Abi at the Space Needle.  I don’t get to photograph Lisa very often so this was clearly a special occasion.  I really like this image but that little cow would have been great too.  All I can say is, Bugger!

Carter was playing “Show me the Money” tonight from his quarter throne.

This afternoon Lisa and I took Abi to see Mamma Mia at the Paramount Theater in Seattle.  Abi loves the film and has never seen the musical on stage so it was a treat for her.  Lisa and I have seen it a couple of times before (once in England and once here in Seattle) and it’s a really good show.  Abi loved it – had a blast.

When we left the theater it was lovely and sunny outside and with blue skies, so we went looking for something to shoot for today’s picture.  We drove over to the Space Needle as they are currently hanging a huge Angry Bird off the side to advertise the release of the Angry Birds Space game.

We parked up and took loads of shots.  I got the one below of the Space Needle and some lovely ones of Lisa and Abi with the Space Needle behind (but I’ll save those for another day).

Carter left school early to join the army and didn’t graduate from High School.  As a result he never got his GED. (That’s a General Educational Development certificate for any Brits reading this).  Well he has decided to do something about that and now spends time each day revising for his upcoming test.

I think I’ve mentioned this before but something you are encouraged to do when your into photography is look around a lot.  Yeah I know that’s obvious but the premise is to look up and down and not just around you.

Anyway I was walking down 1st Avenue in Seattle and walked past the Lippy Building.  Now there’s nothing special about the building (at least I don’t think there is, I didn’t really check it out), but on the floor just outside the building is an amazing mosaic stating the buildings name.

I kind of walked over the mosaic, it caught my eye and went back to check it out.  I think it’s really cool so decided to take some pictures.  I love the way the mosaic also includes the companies inside – very cool.

I have an eight year old daughter and up until a couple of years ago she used to make me play this terrible game – Pretty Pretty Princess.  It basically involves you taking turns around a board putting on plastic jewelry.  Anyway Carter found the game and played it with Master Chief tonight.
