I figured that as I went to the Redmond Exotic’s Car show and the theme was British cars, I should post something from the UK.  Ironically most of my favorite British cars weren’t there (no idea why), but there were a few interesting models.  For example there was this MG J2.

The J2 was a two-seater roadster that came out in 1933.  It had a top speed of 65 miles an hour (and that was a lot for a commercial car) and cost a whopping £199 (that’s around $310).  The car had no roof and was pretty open to the elements – tiny doors and a little windscreen.  But it looked cool – especially the front of the car as it had a lot of chrome on the car.

I wanted to get a good composition but there were loads of people walking behind the car and were in shot.  The car was partially in shade and it was the front of the car with the yellow grill that caught my attention.  So I thought I’d try to capture a picture of that.  So I went to the front of the car and lied down on the floor and took the shot below.  My friend Chris who was there with me taking pictures thought I was nuts, people were walking round me as I laid in front of the car.  But I’m kind of immune to funny looks these days, so I don’t care.

Anyway considering the conditions I’m pretty pleased with the shot, I think the car came out well and there aren’t too many distractions around the car.

Tonight the guys started packing for tomorrows trip to Maui.

On Saturday I went back to the Redmond Exotic Car show and saw this red Shelby Cobra.  I’ve taken a picture of one of these before but I really like the curvy lines on this car and couldn’t resist shooting one again.   Last time I posted a Cobra I got down on the ground really low and just captured front grill (or air intake) and near-side wheel.  So I didn’t think it was cheating posting this picture.

I know these are basically kit cars (although you can find some originals) but I love them.  They look fun, fast and really sexy.

If you read my posting a few nights ago you will know that this show was British Car Week and here is another American car!  I did shoot some British cars honest and promise I’ll post some soon.

I know this again isn’t a complete car shot but I like the shape of the cars side and the red polished finish looked really nice.  One day I’ll capture a compete Cobra so you know what they look like, but for now you’ll just have to trust me that they look REALLY cool.

The guys joined me at work today for a very long day – we got home at 9:45pm and were in at 7:30am.  Anyway, they were bored while at work and found the most complex desk puzzle ever made!

As I’d exhausted my backlog of cars, I decided to go back to Redmond’s “Exotics” car show.  This show is on every weekend (weather permitting) and each week they have a different theme.

This weekend it was “British Car” week, so I went along to see what I could find.  I expected to see lots of Lotus and Jaguar’s (and wasn’t disappointed), but there were loads of manufactures that were conspicuous by to their absence.  For example, only one TVR (and it was it poor condition), no Triumphs (couldn’t believe that), not one Spitfire or Stag (my favorite) and only two MGs and no MGBGT – a wonderful car.

So it was a little disappointing and if I see one more Lamborghini at these shows I’ll scream – sorry James, I know you love them.  Having said all this there were some beautiful cars there and I got some nice pictures.

Despite the British theme, my posting tonight is a Porsche – funny eh?  This is an old Porsche 356 Speedster.  It was parked in a great position with some nice bushes behind, and nobody was in shot!  That’s pretty rare at these things you have to have the patience of a saint as there is always someone in the way.  But for this image I was lucky.

I loved the cream/yellow color of this car and the chrome on the front really set it off.  It was in fantastic condition, absolutely beautiful.  If I owned a Porsche, it would have to be one of these – but as it’s a convertible, it’s not really a car for Washington State.

This afternoon Carter decided to show Master Chief his new ride.  I think Master Chief was a little jealous.

At the beginning of the year I said I wanted to try lots of different types of photography.  One form I haven’t tried yet is product shots.  As my new Nikon D4 arrived today, I thought I’d do a nice shot of my new camera, using my old camera – for the last time.

This shot took 20 minutes to set up, with some black paper behind the camera creating a seamless backdrop, the camera sitting on an upturned cooking bowl with one of James’ black t-shirts on it, and three speed lights pointing at the camera from different angles.  Amazingly it was pretty easy to set up and I got good images almost immediately.

So here is the D4 in all it’s glory.  I haven’t really taken that many pictures with it yet, but the few I have taken have left me already very impressed.  This thing can shoot images in nearly complete darkness by supporting incredibly high ISO settings.  The focusing speed is amazing and I got some fantastic shots of Roxie on the deck and Abi on the trampoline, everything was in focus, and I took 11 images a second!  Think about that, that’s almost unbelievable.

Abi did a somersault and I got her perfectly as she spun in the air.  When I go to Abi’s gymnastic meets later in the year I should be able to capture some amazing images.

Getting this camera has been a bit of a nightmare.  I decided early last year I wanted what’s called a “full frame” camera, that’s a camera with a sensor that’s the same size as 35mm film.  However the Nikon models at the time were coming to the end of their lives and the new “D4” was supposed to be coming out in March 2011.

However Japan had a really bad year last year.  There was of course the terrible tsunami and later in the year a lot of very bad flooding.  Both times the Nikon factories were hit.  All through this I decided not to by the older D3S.  Rumors kept coming out that the D4 was around the corner, and summer went to fall, and fall to winter every month the release date moved out.

January came around and on the 6th, Nikon announced the new D4.  Early in the morning camera stores around the US started to accept advanced orders (there were none around but we were promised a February delivery).  So I went to one of the largest suppliers in the US, Adorama.  I’ve purchased a lot of gear from Adorama over the years and been very happy with them, their prices are good and they ship for free.  So Adorama it was.  I would bet I placed my order within 10 minutes of them letting you in.

Anyway, February came and went, as did March and April, each month Adorama promised a delivery in two weeks.  I have to say I was getting really frustrated but I guess it really wasn’t their fault, Nikon just weren’t shipping cameras.

By the time it got to June I was really worried I wouldn’t get the camera for my July vacation.  So I signed up to an online service that promised to text me when a major supplier got some in stock.  Last week at 7:30am I got a text message saying Best Buy had some D4s.  I placed my order with them in 3 minutes and got one. 15 minutes later they were sold out.  When I got to work I called Adorama and cancelled my order with them and today Best Buy delivered my camera (exactly when they said they would).

Lisa keeps asking me if I’m excited but in truth it’s all a major anti-climax.  I’ve waited well over a year for this camera, I’ve had lenses on a shelf that only work with the full frame sensor that I couldn’t use for ages waiting for the D4 to arrive.  So yes I’m really pleased but I’ve never had to wait so long for an item I have the money for!  Very, very frustrating.

Anyway, I’m off work tomorrow and going out to test the camera out.  Expect more posts on the D4 and LOTS and LOTS of images.  Thank you Best Buy, you made my summer.

As the D4 arrived today, the Halo guys insisted on getting an unboxing shot.  I particularly like Carter’s pose.

A couple of weeks ago Lisa and I went to Redmond to the weekly farmer’s market.  I think it was the first one of the year so there were a lot of people there milling around checking out all the fresh fruit and vegetables, flowers and crafts.  We didn’t have any intention of actually buying anything we were just wandering.  However we saw some fuchsia hanging baskets and thought they would look lovely on the porch.

So we brought two baskets and struggled with them back to the car – they were massive.  One was still wrapped in paper but the other was opened up and hanging so we had to carry it up in the air.  Fortunately none of the fuchsia blooms had opened up so it was all stalks and leaves.

When we got them home we hung them up and inserted our sprinkler system hoses into the baskets.  I also turned on the sprinkler system so they would be watered every day.  Unfortunately though the water wasn’t coming out!  Lisa called the landscape guy who put the system in and arranged for him to come over and fix it.  It took nearly two weeks for him to get to us and I had to periodically manually water the baskets when I got home.

However once the water was back on the baskets started to get the sun and water they needed and these beautiful fuchsia flowers came into bloom.  I thought they’d make a great subject for a daily posting, so today I put the macro lens on the camera and went outside with a tripod.

Now these baskets were hanging from the porch roof and it was windy today and they were swinging and spinning around.  I tried to get a shot but my lens choice needed a long exposure with a small aperture and every shot had motion blur.  I really wanted the flower with a green background but it wasn’t happening out front.

So I cut one of the stems and took it into the back garden and pinned it to a light stand.  I had the trees behind as a nice green backdrop and tried again.  Once again the wind was killing me, I really needed the flowers to stay motionless for around 3 seconds so this wasn’t working either.

As a result I tried plan three.  I pulled the light stand into the house, shut the patio sliding door and tried again.  Now the flowers were not moving, but the ambient light meant that the flowers were dark for the outside exposure, or the green trees outside were blown out for the inside exposure.  ARRGGGGHHHHH!  So out came the lights.  I put a small softbox on the flowers to the right and some fill light off to the left and captured the picture below.

I’m sometimes asked how long I take on a picture.  Some are really quick, you walk up to the subject and away you go.  Other times you have to go out of your way to find the subject, and others like today you just have to work it until you get the shot you want.  I’d like to say that most times it’s quick, but that’s not the case, it’s usually a lot of work.

Even halo guys like a good sucker!
